This week in class we watched a video on labotamy. It showed the begining of the procedure and how labotamy ended up being a bad treatment at the end. The whole procedure of labotamy seemed like a good long term solution but only helped out the mentally ill for a short amount of time. It ended up hurting the patentients a lot more phyisically then treaating them. There is a great difference between a mental illness and a physical illness. Physical illnesses such as broken bones can most of the time be easily cured. Mental illnesses are not like physical illnesses. They take time to heal if not leave the patient with physical damage. Doctors that operate on physical parts have it much easier than mental illness doctors because most of the time it is dificullt to pinpoint the cause of the behavior.
It's fine to experiment on humans in order to find a cure for a diesease as long as the the human is dead because then the side effects will be known. Or the experiment could be used on someone that is desperate and can't find anyother cure to their disease. Not everything has to be human tested, sometimes animals can be used unless it is very harmful and could hurt them.

  1. I feel like experimenting on dead people will not get the full effect on if bad things will happen to someone who is alive. I believe working with dead people may help but not fully establish the effect on people.

  2. I don't think lobotomies were good in the long term because some times the people went back to their old ways and some times it had side effects on people. That's true, I didn't think of that, that physical illness can be cured faster then a mental illness. If the human is dead i don't think you will be able to see how they respond to the treatment which wouldn't really help us find out how a living person would take it.

  3. Lobotomies are stupid and I believe they should be illegal. I feel this is the "easy" way for doctors to "cure " a person's mental illness but I believe the better outcome comes when the person is treated through counseling or therapy. Mental illness involves behavior that is LEARNED therefor the person can learn to become a better person. Lobotomies are just another surgery which doctors hope become successful in a person and if not well they're just screwed.

Although I agree with the fact lobotomies are not a proper cure, I do not believe experimenting on the dead is a good idea. Like Sophie said, it will not show the effect it will have on people. I believe rats are the animals to experiment on because they are already being used in experiments such as the effect on drugs and other things such as what needs cause a drive and motivate their behavior.

  4. I don't think experimenting on dead people will help find a cure for a disease. The human body is totally shut off from A-Z, and that won't tell what the side effects will be because there is nothing for the vaccine or some sort of cure to do because the body is shut off. I also disagree with experimenting on animals wether it is harmful or not, its still wrong. You are not going to hear from a monkey saying "hey doc I feel like a new monkey", but you will hear this "hu hu hu aaa".

  5. Lobotomies in my opinion did nothing other than making things harder for people in the long run. Like Sophie said, experimenting on dead people wont show the same effect, so there really is not point. Truthfully, experimenting on any human or animal is messed up, but how else is science going to get the results?
